Basic Skills Program

Learn the FUN-damentals of Skating!
2011/2012 Season

All students must pay a once-per-year registration fee of $12.00 for the 2011/2012 Season.

Basic Skills Classes and Snowplow Sam Classes are $90.00 for a 6-week session.

Class size is limited; all new registrations will be taken on a first come basis. Please register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot in class.

Skate more, advance faster and save - take both the Thursday and Saturday Basic Skills classes for $144.00.

Family Discount - First family member is full price each additional family member will receive a $1.00 per-class discount.

Registration Forms will be available on February 4, 2012 at the Beaver County Ice Arena for this Session.

Skate Rental is available from the ice arena for $3.00 per lesson.

Skating School Policies

The objectives of the program are:

  • To provide a fun and safe skating experience for the beginner as well as the more advanced skater
  • To teach correct technique of the basic elements of skating
  • To develop a finer degree of coordination and balance
  • To promote physical fitness
  • To have fun!

Snowplow Sam Curriculum
Helmets are required

Ages: 3-5
The Snowplow Sam levels are designed to help the preschool age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice.

Snowplow Sam is a big, fuzzy, white bear who loves to skate. Time with Snowplow Sam will allow preschool children to become comfortable on the ice.

Basic Skills Curriculum

Ages: 5 and up
The Basic Skills are the fundamentals of the sport. These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves — forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and mohawks.

Upon completion of the Basic 1-8 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating.

Thursday Basic Skills, 5:30pm - 6:30pm

Saturday Basic Skills, 12:30pm - 1:30pm


Skating School Policies

  • PAYMENT: Full payment must accompany all registrations to guarantee your spot in class. We accept cash or personal checks.
  • RETURNED CHECK FEE: Returned checks will be subject to a $20.00 fee. If your check is returned for any reason you will be notified immediately. The student will not be able to participate in class until the Payment and Returned Check Fee are paid in full.
  • NO REFUNDS: NO REFUNDS will be given without a valid doctor’s excuse. Make-up lessons are available on request. All make ups classes must be made before the end of the 6-week semester.
  • HELMETS: All students 6 and under must wear a helmet.
  • SPECTATORS: Parents are welcome to watch class and must do so from the bleachers. The doors to the rink will be closed when class starts. NO STANDING at the glass or the rink doors will be permitted as this is disruptive to the skaters and coaches.
  • GROUPS: We reserve the right to combine groups if not enough students are enrolled for each level.
  • NO EXCEPTIONS: No exceptions will be made to these policies. By signing the waiver on the registration form you are agreeing to abide to these policies.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Please be courteous and arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for lacing skates.
  • Wear gloves to protect hands from cold and ice
  • All beginners (under Basic Skills Level 4) should wear figure skates for better balance—the transition to hockey skates can be made more easily after confidence is established.
  • Dress in layers—avoid bulky clothing
    If you rent skates please remember the number on the heel of the boot and get those skates every week.
  • If you would like to purchase your own skates please ask for information about the proper skates to purchase for Basic Skills lessons.
